The protective capability of a helmet is difficult to measure at the time of purchase because there are untold types of accident scenarios. A helmet can provide protection only to the extent that your head is covered with the helmet. However, the use of a well fitted securely fastened helmet can minimize the risk of death or permanent impairment from head injury. For maximum head protection, the helmet must be of proper fit and the retention system must be securely fastened under the chin. Shield: The face shield is made of a strong, transparent material called
polycarbonate and is designed to protect the face of the rider from wind,
dust and insects. these shields are equipped with water and
scratch-resistant coatings, and are usually manufactured using one of two
methods. The first involves conventional shaping of a flat panel using heat
and pressure, and the second utilizes injection molding technology. All Shoei face shields are created using the injection - molding process, which provides the wearer with significantly greater visual clarity and less distortion than the flat panel method. |
Retention System: A Special synthetic fiber chin strap serves to secure the helmet firmly on the rider's head. The retention system is
attached to the helmet using NASA-level metal rivets.
Ventilation System: A ventilation system is a standard feature of more recently produced helmets. It ensures that fresh air is directed into

Outer Shell:
In the event of an accident, the outer shell will absorb and
disperse the impact. All Shoei helmets are made of fiber-reinforced plastic
(FRP), a composite material made up of synthetic resin reinforced with
organic fibers and fiberglass. Manufacturing costs to produce FRP shells are
very high, but the use of modern, lightweight fibers make it possible to produce very strong, yet lightweight shells. Thermoplastics on the other hand, which are used to produce most of the helmets on the road today, must be very thick to provide the required protection and this makes these helmets very heavy. These thermoplastics are also not very resistant to chemicals and the Sun's UV rays, which will weaken them over time. Expanded Polystyrene: The EPS liner protects the wearer's head by absorbing the remaining force of the impact that was already partially absorbed and dispersed by the outer shell. Located inside the outer shell, the liner is made of lightweight, impact-absorbing expanded polystyrene (EPS). Formulated of a variety of materials, Shoei's EPS is the product of more than 40 years worth of research and development. These materials have varying degrees of hardness, which improves the helmet and enhances its ability to disperse the forces of an impact.

Comfort Liner:
Despite rounded shape, the EPS lining is much too hard to
provide a snug and comfortable fit, so Shoei integrates a synthetic foam
padding system covered with a ski-friendly fabric into each helmet. This
padding is made up of several different kinds of foam of varying densities
to ensure a long lasting, comfortable fit. This is especially important, as
the vibrations produced by the helmet during high-speed rides can be
exacerbated if the comfort padding is too soft, which can have a negative effect on the safety of the rider. Additionally, the comfort liner system is also designed to work with Shoei's patented ventilation system to allow maximum cooling throughout the helmet. |

Helmet Fit:
1. Reduced Buffeting: The reduction of buffeting (shifting of the helmet due to external forces), which can lead to rider fatigue or impair a rider's vision, plays an important role in Shoei's design process. Weight and Aerodynamics:
Shoei's engineers have spent hundreds of hours conducting wind tunnel tests
to improve the aerodynamics of each Shoei helmet. They found that most helmets have a very high inertia movement, or center of gravity, at the to top of the helmet. This greatly increases rider fatigue because of the strain that is exerted upon the neck. Shoei has therefore lowered the inertia moment by improving its helmet's aerodynamics. When coupled with lighter and stronger construction materials, these new aerodynamic features have greatly reduced neck muscle strain, which makes for a much more comfortable and safer ride. |

Noise:
Excessive noise in the helmet is just plain annoying, but it can also be a
safety hazard, as it causes increased stress and may divert a rider's
attention from the road. With this in mind, Shoei designs its helmets to
minimize noise so that the rider can enjoy the ride.
Ventilation is more effective if the air has a way out. That is why SHOEI
helmets do not only have effective intakes, but also devices through which

Hyper Dual Liner Ventilation-Animation: All SHOEI full face helmets use a sophisticated ventilation intake below the shield window, which serves a double function: It supplies fresh breathing air to the rider, but also steers an airflow along the inside of the shield. Three Helmet Requirements: A crash helmet must provide the rider with the highest level of protection in a variety of traffic situations: during high speed motorway rides, leisurely rides in the country and naturally in busy inner city traffic. Although a helmet is mainly designed to protect the rider's head, this alone is of little use if the pleasure of motor bike riding is spoiled due to a lack of wearing comfort. In all cases, therefore, guaranteeing that each helmet ensures "safety, comfort, and passion" is of utmost important at Shoei. |
How and where does SHOEI quality originate?
Are motorcycle helmets still just crash helmets or are they the upper part of a racer’s outer skin which is smothered by publicity badges? F.J. Schermer visited the SHOEI factory in Japan and now knows that they are real works of art, manufactured by hand in an intricate and caring process. The primordial basis for quality is precision. Everything is clean, it would be easier to imagine being in a pharmaceutical factory than in helmet production. The pre-formed, accurately weighed fiber mats and the resin are ready to be placed into the steel "baking form". A slack rubber balloon is then pushed into the form and 120&Mac176;C hot steam is blown into the balloon blowing it up to five bars. The mats are thus pressed exactly into the form and actually "baked" for 15 minutes.
SHOEI produces three completely different helmet shells: for the domestic, American and European markets. This is one of the secrets of
the excellent fit of the helmets. After the helmet shells have been cut with water jets and laser beams, the rest of the production is done by hand. The factory staff check the outer shells again and again looking for rough spots. The decals are applied in a bath of water, absolutely no air bubbles should remain. The helmet then goes to the Test and Homologation Department where it undergoes extensive tests
according to all worldwide homologation procedures. Helmets are taken out of production at irregular intervals and tested, tested, tested. Wind turbulence is simulated in the wind tunnel. The slightest bulges or changes at the edges have an influence as to how smooth the
helmet lies in the wind or how noisy or silent it is.
After a day’s visit it was established: typical Japanese quality is produced here by hand. This is why SHOEI helmets can be classified among the best if not the best in the world.
